Reflection
As educators, we have professional responsibilities beyond the classroom. I enjoy what the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) offers for teachers. I have been a member of NCTM for 2 years now and love all the professional growth I experience because I am a member of NCTM. They have great ideas for lessons, they have educational news, what books teachers find to be helpful with reviews, and the list goes on. One of the things I find most beneficial is receiving e-mails from NCTM, this keeps me up to date! In November 2012, I was fortunate enough for Grand Valley State University to allow me to attend the NCTM Regional Conference in Chicago, Illinois. What a wonderful, professional experience! I love growing and learning about my profession, and I believe this is very important for all teachers. After the NCTM conference, I made sure to reflect on my ideas, and my thoughts regarding my experience. I reflected independently, along with my professors and classmate that attended the conference with me. Reflection is a major part of learning, and truly helps to build understanding. Providing reflections about my experience shows I am serious about my professional learning and understanding. Both being a member of NCTM, and attending the Regional Conference (with reflection) is an example of how I am showing my professional responsibilities beyond the classroom.
