Learning target E1 states that effective teachers gather data from an assessment and use the " data to accurately gauge students’ progress toward essential learning outcomes identified during planning". My Mini Lesson artifact clearly used information gathered (chapter 6 test) and selected students for particular groups based on what students needed support with. This mini lesson used the information from the test and informed planning for the next day, modified instruction and increased students understanding.

Effective teachers use summative assessments to accurately gauge students’ achievement of the essential learning outcomes identified during planning[, and they determine the extent to which individual students’ mathematical proficiencies have increased as a result of instruction].

In my rational number unit plan there was a mini assessment given to each student at the very end of the unit. This mini assessment obtained every "I can" statement from the beginning of the unit. With this summative assessment I was able to accurately gauge students achievement for every statement. I was also able to understand what statements students still were unclear of and I made sure to collaberate with every student and provide feedback of what statements they still needed work. I also was able to see where students increased their understanding of the mathematical proficiencies through this mini assessment because throughout this unit I could tell what they were fluent in or needed more work with the discovery worksheets and homework that I assigned. For example, if a student received a 3 out of 5 on their homework, I knew the student was not where they needed to be. I allowed recorrections to be made and after they took the mini assessment I knew if they have improved on a particular statement or not.
